“KAHIRAPAN” umano ang nagtutulak sa mga Palawenyo para sirain ang kagubatan ng lalawigan ng Palawan, ito ang inihayag sa midya ni Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS) Executive Director Atty. Teodoro Jose S. Matta sa ipinatawag na press conference nito lamang araw ng Lunes, Marso 3 upang bigyang-linaw ang mga ibinabatong isyu sa ahensiya.
Ayon kay Matta, sa isinagawang pag-aaral ng PCSDS taong 2022 upang matukoy ang dahilan ng mga pagbaha partikular sa bayan ng Brooke’s Point, na isa sa mga lubos na naapektuhan ng pabagu-bagong panahon at pagkasira ng kagubatan.
Lumalabas na taun-taon, 4,000 ektarya ang nasisirang kagubatan sa lugar dahil sa kaingin, human settlement, at agricultural expansion.
Aniya, kahirapan at kakulangan ng socio-economic programs ang nagtutulak sa mga Palawenyo na tangkilikin ang mga nabanggit na aktibidad.
“One of the key features of the study and researches that we had made recently is that Brooke’s Point alone, 4,000 hectares are lost every year to kaingin, human settlement and agricultural expansion; if you expand this to the other municipalities they have the similar numbers and what are the underlying cause for these activities? It’s poverty. Poverty is the main cause why there are drivers for deforestation.
There is lack of genuine socio-economic programs to uplift our grassroots, our Palawenyos from poverty and that is why they stick to the hinterlands, they stick to the forest and they burn it down or they clear it because there is no viable income for them in our municipalities,” ang pagbibigay impormasyon sa publiko ni Matta.
Aniya, ang resulta ng pag-aaral na ito ay idinulog na rin sa Palawan Development Council, maging sa opisina ng Gobernador kaakibat ang mga pamamaraan na maaaring gawin para maiwasan na ang mga pagbaha sa mga susunod na panahon.
Binigyang diin ng opisyal kung hindi mabibigyang solusyon ang mga problemang ito hindi mabibigyan ng mas maayos na buhay ang mga Palawenyo.
“This is far for more bigger threat imagine 4,000 hectares times 24 municipalities kahit na yung mga mainland municipalities lang yung ibilang mo where most of our forests are. How many thousand of hectares is that.
If we are not addressing tha main cause of deforestation, the main cause of our floods, we [are] blind and deaf to the clamor of our own Palawenyos for better life,” pahayag pa nito sa midya.
